"Many incidents have been recorded of snails living dormant for years in the boxes or drawers of collectors' cabinets or even glued on to cards in the old-fashioned manner, and then 'returning to life' if taken out and put into more normal surroundings. The record must be held by the snail kept in a glass-topped box for twenty years, then revived one summer to live a normal life for several months and afterwards put back into its box. That was in 1920. In 1947 the snail was reported to be still alive but dormant, a sleep lasting for forty-seven years apart from those few summer months."
